| About
Deaf Power Runners & Deaf
Power Walkers |
|
Our
organization was reformed in 1999 with a goal to allow our signing
individuals to compete in the Hood To Coast Relay Race and its
popularity has grown to include three teams from various communities
and businesses. Our organization was originally formed to participate
in the Hood To Coast/Portland To Coast and it has broadened to
include other events to promote exercise and fitness within our
deaf and hard-of-hearing communities and outside. Anyone who is
interested in health and fitness is welcome to join as a member
and have an opportunity to race with
us.
With your
support, we can continue this tradition and further strengthen
our bond and move towards our goal of bringing the community closer
together and expose our Deaf/Hard of Hearing related businesses
to the public thus eliminating the cultural and communication
barriers we occasionally
encounter.

KGWs
Pat Dooris wants our story!
Thanks to Mark
Rosenblume and Jennifer Hummel for nabbing his attention. We are
crossing our fingers in the hopes to get our organization recognized
and mentioned in the public news. Pat Dooris request that we send
them a friendly reminder to add us to their news.
We will keep you posted...
Volunteers
Needed for H2C/P2C
All teams competing
in the H2C/P2C races must provide three non-team member volunteers
for the race. So that means we need NINE (9) volunteers
wow!
All volunteers
will receive two tees (one is an official volunteer tee from H2C/P2C
and the other is a DPR&DPW tee designed by our design committee)
along with the invitation to join our celebration party at the
end of the race.
If willing
and jumpin to do this or know someone that would, please
send an email to publicrelations@dprdpw.org
for more information and instructions. Deadline to let us know
is July 15th.
Calling
for Fundraiser Volunteers
For each of
our fundraising events, we reach out to you in the hopes any of
you would like to be involved in helping us out. Either thru physical
but fun work or thru donations of supplies & foods. No obligations,
we just want to keep you in the loop and give you a chance to
be involved with us in any way youd like to be. Please do
feel free to contact our Fundraiser Chairperson, Teresa Finnigan,
at fundraiser@dprdpw.org
if interested.
IRS Update

Health
Tips#1
Add
Spice and Pep to your workout
Improve your
walks and runs with alternate forms of exercise. This will help
lessen injuries that happen when you do repetitive exercises.
Add a lil spice and change to your training for more pep, enjoyment,
and motivation to your walks and runs. It doesnt hurt to
enhance your health with more FUN
! It can be as simple as
walking up and down a flight of stairs instead of a elevator,
mow the lawn/pull weeds, hike on a trail, play a team sport (softball,
racquetball, etc) or just sit at your desk and do leg and
arm stretches with a barbell! Youd be surprised by how much
better you
feel

Foods for
the soul
Did you know
that all of us need around 40 essential nutrients to keep us healthy
and strong? Would you know which foods we need if we only had
a choice of 10 foods?? Liz Applegate Ph.D, fitness & nutrition
expert, recommends the following top 10 foods that everyone should
include in their diet: Salmon, soy burgers, oranges, raisin bran,
nonfat yogurt, almonds, canned refined beans, energy bars, salad
greens, and tea. Get the full article (Fare Essentials)
on why these foods go on the internet and type this url:

For Runners
(Pulled from www.runnersworld.com)
One way to
improve your running is to do a plyometric exercise. Here are
our great plyometric exercises recommended for runners by Donald
Chu, Ph.D., director of rehabilitation at Stanford University
and author of Jumping into Plyometrics. In general, they'll help
improve explosive push-off, ankle range of motion, and stride
length. Be sure to ease into these exercises gradually; otherwise
you run the risk of injury.
1. Alternate
bounding: This is a very long running stride with exaggerated
knee lifts. Bound for 30 yards, rest 1 minute. Do four repetitions.
In later sessions,
gradually increase the distance to 100 yards.
2. Skipping:
Skip for 30 yards; rest 1 minute. Do four repetitions. In later
sessions, increase the distance to 100 yards.
3. Split-squat
jump: Start in a lunge position, and jump upward and forward,
pushing off the front leg. Land in the lunge position, and repeat
continuously for 10 yards. Rest 45 seconds. Do three repetitions,
and work up to six. In later sessions, gradually increase the
distance to 100 yards.
4. Two-foot
ankle hops: Stand up straight, and hop forward for 10 yards, keeping
feet together; rest 45 seconds. Do three repetitions, and work
up to
a maximum of six.
For Walkers
(Pulled from www.thewalkingsite.com)
TIPS FOR WALKING
FASTER
1. Walk tall.
Use good posture. Look forward, (not at the ground) gazing about
20 feet ahead. Your chin should be level and your head up.
2. Shoulders
down, back and relaxed. Chest forward.
3. Tighten
your abs and buttocks. Flatten your back and tilt your pelvis
slightly forward. Pretend you are walking along a straight line.
4. Bend your
arms in slightly less than a 90 degree angle. Cup your hands gently.
Swing arms front to back (not side to side - arms should not cross
your body.) Do not swing elbows higher than your sternum (breast
bone). Swing your arms faster and your feet will follow.
5. Push off
with your toes. Concentrate on striking with the heel, rolling
through the step and pushing off with your toes. Use the natural
spring of your
calf muscles to propel you.
6. Resist
the urge to elongate your steps. To go faster -- take smaller,
faster steps.
7. Breathe
naturally. As you walk, take deep, rhythmic breaths, to get the
maximum amount of oxygen through your system.
WALKING DON'TS
Common mistakes
made by walkers:
1. Do not over
stride
2. Do not use too vigorous arm movements
3. Do not look at the ground
4. Do not hunch your shoulders
5. Do not carry hand weights or place weights on your ankles

We had a productive
meeting on June 15th, Tuesday evening. Heres the brief
news of whats going on
-We need two
more walkers for the P2C race. The running team for H2C is full

celebration along with food choice of hamburger/veggie OR crab/steak.
We are collecting info on who is going and will let all that is
