About Deaf Power Runners & Deaf Power Walkers

Our organization was reformed in 2000 with a goal to allow our signing individuals to compete in the Hood To Coast Relay Race and its popularity has grown to include three teams from various communities and businesses. Our organization was originally formed to participate in the Hood To Coast/Portland To Coast and it has broadened to include other events to promote health and fitness within our Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing communities and outside. Anyone who is interested in health and fitness is welcome to join as a member and have an opportunity to race with us.

With your support, we can continue this tradition and further strengthen our bond and move towards our goal of bringing the community closer together and expose our Deaf/Hard-of-Hearing related businesses to the public, thus eliminating the cultural and communication barriers we occasionally encounter.

  A Message from Our Chairperson

Wow...what a year this has been! This organization was brought back from the dead nearly five years ago in 2000 and this year is by far the strongest. We gathered together a phenomenal group that gave our DPR&DPW connections that are far and wide. We are continuing to gain strength and stability which wouldn't happen without our awesome crew. Many of you were allowed the opportunity to learn many different areas that run an organization: host a fundraiser, be a committee chair, lead a group, among many others. All these tools are valuable in continuing the DPR&DPW organization and can be used for other organizations that some of us may be interested in the future.

We noticed a positive growth in those who follow a healthy lifestyle and we want to pass along the "boost" to you so you can have that awesome benefit too. If you want us to host a team for any sporting event...let us know and we can make it happen.

If you want to join our crew or want us to host a team...PLEASE do send an email to chairperson@dprdpw.org.

To prove that our organization actually rocks...read some of our runners' and walkers' comments at the very bottom of this eNews.

So, COME ON, allow yourselves to be addicted to us!!

A message from our Public Relations Chair

Being a public relations chairperson is a HUGE job that requires a lot of outreach and marketing. We are responsible for our eNews, memberships, announcements, notifications, design editing (we help our design team with editing on our flyers, postcards, etc...), runners/walkers/volunteer recruitment, "thank you" correspondences, and much more. We have another addition under our sleeves - sell tees and posters which a few of you are asking for. AND there will be more as we grow stronger and bigger.

This is why we are so excited to announce that Marianne Decher is willing to be our PR assistant and help lessen the PR load. She will be responsible for sending out emails regarding our training schedule, fundraisers and our famous "friendly reminders". Please welcome her and give her a "hands wavin' in air" cheer when you see her!

If you are interested in being a part of the PR team along with Marianne and me (KatyBeth), please PUH-leese send an email to publicrelations@dprdpw.org. We could use YOU!

Here are a few of PR reports... (Membership, website and design team)

Membership

So far we have about 50 members in our organization. And still counting...

Many GIGANTIC thanks to all of you who have supported and rooted for us. Without you we would NOT have materialized!!

DPR&DPW has membership for those who want to join our organization for walking/running enjoyment. For a mere $10.00 annually, you will receive a monthly eNews, training schedule, special privileges, discounts, and all the latest information and access to our training, fundraiser, and meeting information. The best part is the health benefits of training with us without having to join a team.

The benefit for us is your continued support. The $10 contribution will go towards the costs in maintaining our organization. With your support, we all can succeed.

If you are interested or know someone that is interested in being a member of our DPRunners & DPWalkers organization without having to be on a team please give us an email at membership@dprdpw.org.

Design Team

Hello everyone!

We want to say "Thank you for requesting us to design your needs for DPR&DPW!" We are working very hard on DPR&DPW projects as we want to make sure that the projects we do continue to look professional and have good information about this organization. Also, we want to make your announcements in print to look great and make people to join and support DPR&DPW. Many members and non-members were impressed with our DPR&DPW designs. We designed many projects: flyers, postcards, letterheads, "Thank You" cards, shirts, and membership cards. We will continue to design new projects: new shirts for 2005, posters, banners, revised logo, flyers, and possibly many more projects will come.

If you would like to request the design team to create something for a DPR&DPW fundraiser event, please make sure to fill out our "Request for Design Team" form. If you don't have it, please contact Design Team at design@dprdpw.org. We will be happy to help you!

Thanks!

  A message from our Captains

This year's captains are Howard Hammel (walking) and Greg Coughlan (running) and their assistants are Susan Cunningham (walking) and Michael Rakozy (running).

Captain Howard - Walking
I am a new walking captain for Team P2C '05. I want to thank Susan Cunningham for a wonderful job as our walking captain this past year. She managed to keep things together with our two walking teams... Although we were short on walkers, we turned out better than last year. She had great faith in us. Now she can relax a bit as I take over her position. (Gulp) Please bear with me. Ok. I hope to see many of you at the Recruiting Party on October 16. Come and sign up for next year's fun-filled event.

Captain Greg - Running
Captain Greg is SO impressed with the runners, that he's a total loss for words. Please look for his commentary in the next eNews. Stay tuned!

  Health Tips

Health Tips#2

Apples are perfect for keeping the doctor away (really). Apples contain an antioxidant that may stave off the decline of lung capacity that occurs over time from air pollution. In a study of more than 2,490 men, those who ate five or more apples a week could suck in and pump out more air from their lungs than those who didn't eat any apples. Aim for one a day! (Pulled from www.runnersworld.com)

For Runners (Pulled from www.runnersworld.com)

"Running should be a passion, not an obsession. Obsessions burn out while passions, despite the occasional flicker during one of life's storms, blaze on and on." -Joan Nesbit-Mabe, former U.S. Olympian, an elite masters runner, and coach.

Work out of the month: Warm up 2-3 miles of easy running. Then, on a stretch of road or grass run 4 x 5-minutes at your 10-K race pace, with a 3-minute recovery jog between each one. Run 3-4 strides approximately 30 to 40 seconds in length. Cool down with an easy 1 to 2 miles.

For Walkers (Pulled from www.runnersworld.com)

When shin splints strike try ice to reduce inflammation. Another good treatment is to trace the alphabet (in a sitting position) on the floor with your toes. Do this with each leg. Or alternate walking on your heels for 30 seconds with 30 seconds of regular walking. Repeat four times. These exercises are good for both recovery and prevention. Try to do them three times a day.

Benefits of walking (Pulled from www.thewalkingsite.com)
Burns calories
Strengthens back muscles
Slims your waist
Easy on your joints
Strengthens your bones
Lowers blood pressure
Allows time with family and friends
Shapes and tones your legs and butt
Cuts cholesterol
Reduces risk of heart disease, diabetes, & more
Reduces stress
Sleep better
Improves mood and outlook on life
Can be done almost anywhere
Requires no equipment
AND it's Free!

A message from our Safety Chair

It's autumn! We can enjoy a fun and healthy fall season by following the safety tips for runners and walkers, especially for those who will be training for the H2C and P2C next year in August 2005.

Always walk on the sidewalk. If there is no sidewalk and you have to walk in the road, always walk FACING traffic, so you can see any car that might go out of control.

Dress to be seen. Wear bright-colored clothing during the day and reflective clothing
at night. Dressing properly makes it easier for the drivers to notice you.

Never run/walk alone. Use the buddy system. Ask your friend or relative to go with you. Your four-legged friend can join you for an outdoor exercise, however, please obey all licensing, leash, and poo-poo scoop laws in the area you are running/walking through.

Cool autumn months. Dress warm by wearing several layers of quick drying nylon/spandex blend fabrics if you are training in the cool early morning or late evening. Avoid wearing cottons that retains body moisture causing hypothermia. Bring a bottle of water with you to keep yourself well hydrated.

Carry ID. Always bring identifications such as driver's license in case of accident or medical emergency. Carrying a cell phone or pager is helpful.

Leave jewelry or valuable items at home.

Communication is important. Always tell someone which route you will be training and what time you expect to return.

Keep right. If you're walking on a cycling or pedestrian path, always walk on the right hand side so that faster walkers, runners and cyclists can easily pass. If you're walking with one or more companions, don't hog the path and prevent others from easily overtaking.
Any questions regarding safety, please contact Rita Wallberg at safety@dprdpw.org.

A message from our Fundraiser Chair

I would like to have an opportunity to say thank you so much to each of you who supported me all the way since last February 2004 when I became a fundraiser chairperson. It was a good experience for me. I learned a lot of new things and I know it is not an easy job but it's a big challenge that I'm willing to take. It is a good benefit for me to learn how to raise funds in many ways. Your volunteerism and teamwork is always an important key to make this wonderful organization stronger and successful. I look forward to working with you for the next year with lots of fun & successful fundraising events.

Here are a few reports from our past fundraising events...

Pizza Schmizza Party:
Jennifer Hummel chaired Pizza Schmizza party at Beaverton Pizza Schmizza last September 18 with a big help from Mikey Wilton, Mark Rosenblume, Greg Coughlan and other supporters. All of us ate and helped raise funds for our wonderful organization. Wave your hands in the air for Jennifer for a good job!!!

DPR&DPW Pool Game:
Thanks to our awesome Howard Hammel who worked hard to earn money from people in filling out all the squares of the pool game throughout the year. Finally the drawing was raffled off at the campsite in Cannon Beach, Oregon after our HTC/PTC walk last August 28. Wanna know who was winner? Howard raffled the ticket and announced the winner and it is Guy Pratt. Thanks to all of you who supported our Pool game! Again Thanks to Howard for a wonderful job and good patience!!

We are working on having another round of this Pool Game but we are looking for someone to take on this "assignment". If you are interested in being a chair of this Pool Game, please let Teresa Finnigan know.

Zoey's Doghouse Social:
An awesome thanks to KatyBeth Anthony for hosting Zoey's Doghouse party at her backyard on August 8. Thanks to all the hardworking volunteers and big generous contributors for coming together to bake delicious dog cookies one week before the party. People were commenting on how cute and creative the doggie bags were - thanks to Theresa Coughlan and KatyBeth on a great job in sewing them. And, good news for all you Cat lovers! KatyBeth plans to add cat bags too and will host it again next year in the late spring or early summer time. You rock! KatyBeth. Thank you!

3rd Annual Pancake Feed:
A heartfelt thanks to Sandra Kindblade who chaired our 3rd annual Pancake Feed Day at St. John the Apostle, Oregon City on July 11. 130 people from the church and outside the church came to eat with us. A big bunch of applause to all the awesome volunteers who worked so hard and made the Pancake feed so successful and smooth. Thank you to all volunteers. We couldn't have done it without you. We plan to have another (our 4th annual) Pancake Feed next year in the spring time of 2005 at the same church (St. John). Sandra will chair it again. Thank you Sandra!

Dingo Night:
A special acknowledgement to Mikey Wilton, our Dingo announcer, who donated $50.00 into the final bingo game on July 24, 2004. Thank you Mikey for your bighearted donation! Everyone enjoyed playing the games. Lois Cavanger from St. John the Apostle in Oregon City was the winner for the second ILU quilt. 50/50 raffle winner was Robert Cunningham. Thank you to all the volunteers for their hard work and your support was awesome. The Staff at Chestnut Lane was so helpful and wonderful. They said our volunteers did a good job.

Can collection:
Our highly energized Mikey Wilton did the unbelievable dirty & sticky job of collecting many many empty bottles and cans for refunding to use money for our organization. To our Surprise, the can collection budget was higher than our expectation! Great news, Mikey is willing to do it again for the next year. If you have any more cans or bottles, please give him a "ping" and he will go and pick it up. No more dirty job for you. Many many thanks to Mikey for a terrific job!

You have any Fundraising Event Ideas?

To all members, volunteers, crew, walkers and runners - If you have ANY ideas and want to host a fundraising event, please contact Teresa Finnigan and we can discuss on how to plan from there. We need your help - we couldn't do it all by ourselves! We hope to hear from you soon…Teresa Finnigan

  Crew "Gossip"

Crew Meetings

Not much gossip this time around but we had two productive crew meetings on July 30th and recently on September 21st that lasted about 2 1/2 hours each (sort of!).

You are welcome to view our meeting minutes. Once you get a password from our webmaster, go to www.dprdpw.org and read them under “membership”.

Annual General Meeting

Our annual general meeting is in September. All of us gather together to plan for the whole year. Racing and fundraising events, training schedule, and whatever else that keeps our ORG running. Our crew positions are yearly but we are hoping to keep our current chair people on for one more year for extra experience and stability.

Quotes from our walkers and runners...enjoy!

Breana Cross

I had a great time, in van 2. This was my 1st time running Hood to Coast, and it was very challenging but also a lot of fun. My teammates were very encouraging and supportive. It was a wonderful experience that I really recommend for anyone considering it!

Cathy Lee-Saxton

A lot of supporters like runners, other teams, spectators are friendly and fun. Also, it is interesting experience.

John Davis

H2C was an incredible fun experience! I have forgotten how much I enjoy running. In fact, it's been 14 years since my last 10K race! I am very happy that Greg asked me to be a part of the Deaf Power Runner Team. I was on the running team, van #1. It took a lot of hard work & commitment to be a part of this special team. It also made the experience a little easier since I already knew some of the team members. I am very happy how it turned out but there is room for improvements. With that said & done... I want to participate H2C again to relive the thrill of this extreme relay race with the people I know.

KatyBeth Anthony

This year's H2C race was the best one out of the five I've been in. The group in Van1 was phenomenal and the good spirits was soarin' with us. DPR&DPW was brought back five years ago and this year is the strongest thus far due to the incredible crew and its bond. It is IMPOSSIBLE to name all of you because no matter how small or how big, it all means so much to many of us!!! Many thanks to all of you who made this possible for so many people!!!

Marianne Decher

Truly, one of the best experiences of my life. Hard work and tiring, no doubt, but SO much fun and definitely worth it. I'm ready to join in again. Let's go!

Mark Foster

I had a blast walking with everyone and this is my second year doing this. It is truly a great group of people who are supportive and get your energy going! We keep going and going...

Michael Rakozy

This is my third times as running for DPR. I have great times with challenge on the roads and team as well. I am sure, you have fun and experience as well!

Patrick Fischer

That was my seventh times to run Hood to Coast Relay and never got tired of it! It was so awesome and wonderful experience! I will continue to run for Hood to Coast Relay until I am 100 years old even I would run with walker. :0) It was so fun and excited to be with our team because I felt great, positive, and good spirit from our team's support! I am encouraging you to join us for great experience and having so much fun!

Steve Perdriau

I heard that the walking team need 2 more walker so I join the team. Later found out they need me to be a driver with Mark Rosenblume. He is a timer for the walker to arrive at the line. I did most of the driving. Early am and late at night. My first walk was 5.7 miles and minute was 12 something. Second walk was at 2 am up hill 6.0 miles thanks to Tim Kindblade because he on the different drive the van saw me letting me know that one of his walker is behind me. I started to walk really fast and roadkill 10 people. My flashlight burn out and it was dark. I can see some walker ahead of me and focus catching up with them. Sandra Kindblade my captain had the ice water and I gave my flashlight (Over the head flightlight) she had no idea what it was thought was a water bottle. My van stop gave me another light and I walk so fast the time was 12:50 something. It was great and I lost 40 pounds!

Susan Cunningham

Oh boy I had a great time, in Van AA Walking. That was my fourth times to Portland to Coast. It was so much fun and challenge experience! I really enjoy be a Captain since 2 years and time for me give to Howard Hammel be my Captain. I am so exciting for you, Howard. Also I want to thank Darby Smith and Mae Johnson who did three legs while I'm driving. I really appreciate you guys. Amazing me that Theresa Coughlan who first time join our walking and first leg she walked for almost 7 miles without giving up even while she had stomach trouble. I want to replace her but she kept going and going. I'm proud of her. Larry Everett from Federal Way, Washington join our team. Thank you and you did great walking. I hope he will bring a lot of pictures of us this Saturday. Also want to THANK YOU all Volunteers and Camping did WONDERFUL job! I want to do it AGAIN!

Teresa Finnigan

I was on the walking team in Van B. The race itself was a blast! This was my second time. We did a great job! Both of my 2 legs were easy and flat in comparison to last year race was more difficult and challenge as I was on the walking team in Van 2. I wanted to thank Susan Cunningham and Greg Coughlan for their hard-working magnificent job to put all amazing walkers and runners together for this big race. Another big thanks to Bob Cunningham, Kim/Eric Braun and Guy Pratt for their volunteering time in setting up tents, table, prepare dinners, barbecuing steaks/mushrooms and starting up campfire to warm everyone at night. Thank you to each of you, walker, runners, volunteers & members for making this teams successful and in a good spirit. I am so proud of you all.
